About me

Doreen Backway My passion for dollmaking began in 1996 with past craft skills and imagination culminating in the perfect outlet – figurative fantasy sculpture. I prefer sculpting with polymer clay and cloth, occasionally diversifying into terracotta sculpting, miniatures, drawing, painting and quilts.  These other activities enhance my sculpting and dollmaking skills.

As a child my imagination was enriched by Enid Blyton’s The Faraway Tree series, C.S. Lewis stories of Narnia and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.  Today my vivid and wild imagination continues as a natural extension of my inner thoughts.

Living in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, Victoria, Australia is very inspirational and provides the perfect bushland setting for fantasy folk. The natural colours and textures of the environment captivate and inspire me. I enjoy learning new techniques, developing ideas, collecting unusual textured fabrics, jewellery, wood, rocks and seedpods to enhance my treasured stash.

I am a member of the Australian Cloth Doll Association (ACDA) and Victorian Feltmakers Inc. which are great groups for encouragement, inspiration, sharing knowledge and ideas.
